Chalk Cloth Gift Tags

This weekend I started tackling my Christmas crafting by knocking out the easiest project on the list.  Chalk cloth gift tags aren’t just clever, they’re reusable and a cinch to make!

Start off by Mod Podging the felt to the back of the chalk cloth.  To provide constant pressure I stacked magazines and books on top of the two fabrics.  I let it dry overnight but I’m sure it wouldn’t take that long.

Using your pinking shears cut out rectangles, squares, circles, or whatever shaped tags you’d like.

I had a really hard time finding a way to get the ribbon tie on the tag with the littlest amount of effort.  First I tried the hole punch, but my hands just weren’t strong enough.  Then I tried using that upholstery/leather needle, but it was just too hard.

What worked best was using a nail to poke a guide hole through the chalk cloth side of the tag and then using the needle to pull the ribbon through.

Decoratively Sewn Chalk Cloth Gift Tags

Supplies

This time we’re going to start by using the pinking shears to cut out our gift tags from the chalk cloth.

The next step is sewing the tags onto the felt so get that sewing machine out and pick out a decorative stitch.  There’s no real need to pin the chalk cloth to the felt.  I just held it to make sure there was no puckering while I sewed around the edges of the tag.

Use the same method described above to get the ribbon tie onto the tag.

  2. Cuteness to the max! I love this idea! (and that they are reusable). My late great grandma would have loved these too....she made everyone carefully unwrap their presents so she could re-use the paper. We'd love you to share it with our readers as well for Fun Stuff Fridays linky party. http://www.toysinthedryer.com/2011/12/fun-stuff-fridays-2.html
