Like every other American women I have one revolving resolution and unchecked goal on my to-do list; get healthy and lose weight. But unlike millions of others who may lose momentum and become discouraged, I’m approaching these lifestyle changes with a validated mind and spirit after reading Why Women Need Fat by William D. Lassak, M.D. and Steven J.C. Gaulin, Ph.D.. Using both medical and sociological studies, to examine the history behind the great American obesity epidemic, the authors lay out facts and observations that speak to our common sense.
A balanced diet filled with natural foods (including butter, red meat, bread, etc.) has always seemed logical to me but I’ve been taught to look at the fat content of that diet and run away in horror. Why Women Need Fat is a comfort to the part of my mind that’s never stopped questioning those mainstream views that I’ve let influence me for too long.
This isn’t a diet book; there are no quick fixes or unrealistic claims. The authors aren’t afraid to tell you that the body you want for yourself may not be the one you’re meant to have. But is that really such a bad thing? Personally I found the insights reassuring and enlightening. I can’t count the times I called my husband over to explain to him why small waists are attractive or why there are more c-sections and how that relates to what we eat.
To understand your future you need to understand your past. This book explains our past and gives us the tools we need to finally get healthy. I highly recommend it.
